Basics of Arc Welding


Welding is a very easy process to learn about. Arc welding and stick welding are one of the most basic and common welding techniques that are initially thought to every welding student. Arc welding can be thought in four basic steps.
Step1: Equip yourself with safety accessories before you enter the domain to weld. This is a must irrespective of what your experience in welding is. Even the most experienced, brilliant welder has to take care of safety precautions before he starts to weld.
Step2: Always work with clean metals. This is a preparatory stage of welding. Clean your work piece properly before you work upon it.
Step3: Check for the welding earth connection. Make sure it is good. You are mainly using electricity to carry out the task of welding and if your earth connection is not good enough, you are most likely to mess up the task. An area of potential problems can be eliminated
Step4: Strike the arc properly. This is one of the biggest concerns for any welder and there are only three possible ways to do it;
•    Flick up from an edge
•    Strike like a match/scratch it
•    Tap it straight down, then back up

TIG Welding- A Concept

Differences between TIG and MIG are as follows;
Tig uses non consumable electrode method and MIG uses vice versa.

Tig uses constant current supply while MIG uses constant voltage supply

MIG Welding and its Types


Metal Inert Gas in short term known as MIG welding. It is popularly known as Gas Metal Arc Welding. In Mig welding process the usage of aluminum alloy wire with the combination of filler material and electrode are used by the welders. The process is one of the easiest processes that one can learn to weld. As the welder is capable of meeting all the parameters of welds with the help of machine it can also be termed as semi-automatic weld.
Mig welding can be carried on at two different processes they are:
  • Conventional Metal Inert Gas weld-
    In this process of welding it uses DC power source with constant voltage. As there is limitations for the spray transfer, for the arc current the welding has its lower limits. Since it is limited to certain range it can weld materials where the thickness being above 4 mm.
  • Pulsed Metal Inert Gas weld-
    Here the passage of DC power source is retained at low and high intervals. When the welds are done at low current welders maintain the arc without transferring metals. And during the high current passage metals are transferred in spray mode. Therefore this makes Pulsed welding process to weld at high and low heat inputs which is not possible in conventional process. And the possibility of welding thinner materials is much easier at any positions.

It should be able to fit in your workshop. Also the roll capacity of your equipment is important. For most operations, a 12lb machine should be good enough to keep you running back for more wire. Also if the unit has a flux core with optional drive rolls then it should be a good bargain for you.
